John Torrey: A Flora of the State of New-York, Comprising Full Descriptions of All the Indigenous and Naturalized Plants Hitherto Discovered in the State; With Remarks on Their Economical and Medicinal Properties. (Albany: Carroll and Cook, Printers to the Assembly, 1843), in two volumes, first edition, 484 and 572 pages respectively, 160 hand-colored plates, rebound in a black quarter leather binding with black cloth boards, six compartments between five raised spine bands, gilt titles on black morocco spine labels, 4to (9.5” x 11.75”), foxing to the prelims and a few of the plates, toning to page edges, else contents bright, sound and in near fine condition. Portions of the original cloth binding with gilt floral decoration are laid in at the back of volume one. A beautiful set. The New York natural history series was authorized in 1836, and John Torrey was placed in charge of the botanical portion of it shortly thereafter. He spent the intervening years between that time and publication accumulating a wealth of botanical data for inclusion in this present work. No other state has commissioned and completed a work of this magnitude.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
