John Stockdale, 1805 Antique Hand-Colored Map of Kent, England
Original hand-colored copperplate engraving titled A Map of Kent from the best Authorities, published by John Stockdale on March 26, 1805. Engraved by J. Cary, one of the most renowned English cartographers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, this map presents a highly detailed view of the English county of Kent, showing towns, roads, rivers, topographical features, and administrative divisions known as Hundreds. The map includes a key listing all 61 Hundreds along the lower left margin and is enriched with delicate color outlines highlighting county boundaries. This antique map is printed on laid paper and retains its original hand-applied watercolor outlining. The compass rose in the upper right adds a decorative element, while fine cartographic detailing reflects the accuracy and craftsmanship of early 19th-century British mapmaking.
