Desirable circa 1939 lithograph entitled 'John Brown,' 13.25 x 18.5, signed in the lower border in pencil, "John Steuart Curry." The magnificent lithograph features the great abolitionist John Brown during the unrest of 'Bleeding Kanasas,' with flaring eyes and wind-whipped beard, radiating moral outrage as a tornado whirls in the background; a slave is seen in the lower left corner. The image is derived from one of Curry's studies for his 'Tragic Prelude' mural commissioned for the rotunda of the Kansas State Capitol. Curry’s interpretation of John Brown and the antislavery movement in Kansas Territory before the Civil War is considered one of his finest murals. In fine condition.

John Steuart Curry (1897–1946) was an American painter known for his portrayals of Kansas, and with Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood has been hailed as one of the three great American Regionalism artists of the 20th century. A superb piece from an iconic American artist.
