TLS marked “Confidential,” one page, 8.5 x 11, June 9, 1944. A letter of invitation to a Mr. Smith. In part: “We invite you to join with us in marking Lion Feuchtwanger’s 60th birthday on July 7th by the presentation to him of an album containing appreciations of the man and his work…. Please do not mention the proposed tribute as we wish to surprise Dr. Feuchtwanger with it.” Signed at the conclusion by Steinbeck, publisher B. W. Huebsch, and screenwriter/director Berthold Viertel. In fine condition, with intersecting folds and a staple hole to upper left corner.

Feuchtwanger, a German-Jewish novelist, offered fierce criticism of the Nazi Party years before it assumed power—which ensured that he would be a target of government-sponsored persecution after Adolf Hitler's appointment as chancellor of Germany in January 1933. Like Feuchtwanger, Steinbeck also endured harsh criticism for what he had published. Following the publication of The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck came under attack from many different angles, included the Associated Farmers of California. An interesting item linking two very similar literary figures, each of whom, despite profound obstacles, found joy in celebrating their freedom of speech.
