Antique hand-colored engraving titled The Approach to the Cascade of Terni, after the original drawing by John Smith and engraved by Pugh, from the publication Select Views in Italy printed in 1796. It presents a picturesque landscape scene of the Nera Valley in Umbria, with travelers on a winding path approaching the dramatic terrain of the Apennines. Notable historical sites are subtly rendered in the distance, and the finely detailed composition is highlighted with subtle hand coloring. The work is housed in a giltwood frame with marbled inner matting and accompanied by extensive exhibition documentation and historic context on the verso, including printed text describing the significance of the location and its classical connections. Published in London for J. Smith, W. Walsh, and A. Edwards. Signature below plate.
