Distinguished American-born artist (1856–1925) who spent most of his career as an expatriate in Europe. While he painted a variety of subjects in various media, his fame rests primarily on his evocative, penetrating society portraits. ALS signed “John S. Sargent,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, personal letterhead, January 2, [1905]. Sargent writes Mrs. Sullivan. In full: “I have no objections to the drawing being reproduced as long as it is one page. If it were colossal like the big photographs and covered two pages with a fold across the nos. I might perhaps say DAMN [stamped in purple ink], but not if it is a reasonable size. I hear you had a narrow escape of being seen about up the other day. Glad you entered year 1905 and give yours all my best wishes.” In fine condition, with a few creases, single horizontal fold, and mirroring of a few letters. Terrific insight into how Sargent preferred his work to be presented.
