Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner
As important as subject matter may be in Shinnors’ compositions, it is the element of design that creates the drama and force in his works. Along with shape, contour, tone and chiaroscuro, it is the use of the line as a tool that is a dominant characteristic. Asymmetric fields of colour divided by sharp lines compete and conflict with one another through the drama of light and dark. Unlike later works by Shinnors, both of the Harlequin paintings in this sale display both abstract complex design and visually recognisable subjects. Painted in 1979, they give his audience an insight into the development of his style. However, rather than clearly represent the Harlequin in a literal fashion, Shinnors cleverly traces the line of the subject. The outline and form of the Harlequin emerges through the carefully articulated composition. The lines are sharp and colour is used liberally. The Harlequin, like Shinnors’ later Scarecrows series, evokes an image of an isolated, melancholy figure which adds to the drama of the designs.
