Exceptionally early ADS, three pages on two sheets, 8 x 12.5, April 1853. Handwritten invoice for a series of claims made by Charles Taylor Sherman and John Sherman, listing in detail seventeen instances in which the brothers served and defended the Columbus & Lake Erie Rail Road Company, amounting to a total of $446.16. Prior to his signature, Sherman adds to the conclusion: "A great deal of professional service was rendered by us in drawing contracts, Bonds, Resolutions, etc. & in consulting & addressing the Directives of which we kept no account—& we are willing to take the above balance in full settlement. We acted generally as attys for the company in all its business & litigation here from its organization." In fine condition, with nearly complete separation along the hinge. Before his career in politics, Sherman passed the bar and joined the firm of his older brother Charles in 1844. Sherman moved to Cleveland and established his own law office in 1853, thus making this one of the final bills shared between the two brothers.
