John Sevier 1782 Autograph Document Signed
John Sevier 1782 Autograph Document Signed as clerk of the Court of Tennessee while it was still part of North Carolina. One page with docketing information on verso, 7.5" x 6.5", North Carolina, first Monday of August, 1782, to the Sheriff of Washington county. John Sevier was the only governor of the State of Franklin (an early secessionist territory now in northeast Tennessee) and the first governor of Tennessee. This document is commanding the sheriff to arrest and hold Alexander and Robert Anderson over for an appearance before the Court of Pleas at the suit of George Barclay. Interestingly, the amount of the damages is written as "Ten Hundred thousand pounds" which was an amazingly large amount of money in 1782! The condition is very good with some weakness at the folds and a couple of old tape repairs on the verso; the writing is still clear and legible. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
