Union general (1813–1864) who was killed by Confederate sharpshooters at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, ironically while berating his men for hiding from enemy fire. War-dated handwritten endorsement on the reverse of a document, one page, 8 x 10, dated late 1863. Document is a request for a furlough to George Stone, a “loader of 2nd Brig Dic 6th Corps of the Band.” Endorsed on the reverse, “Not approved at this time. John Sedgwick, Maj. General.” Reverse also bears five other endorsements. Several clean separations along fragile horizontal folds, none affecting Sedgwick’s endorsement, a few chips to edges, and some light rippling, otherwise very good condition.
