Salling (1858–1959) long claimed to be the second-oldest surviving Confederate veteran. His claim, including a birth date of 1846, remained in the Guinness Book of World Records until 2006, by which time further research established his true age and failed to turn up any record of military service. Vintage matte-finish 8 x 10 photo of Salling posing with a heavily candle-laden birthday cake, signed in red ballpoint “Greetings of John Salling.” Salling has also signed and inscribed on the reverse, “To Jimmie Ray, Greetings from Gen. John Salling, Conf. Veteran, 109 years young.” In very good condition, with signature on front rather light but generally legible (irregular ink flow resulting in several “dropped” letters to last name), a few small creases, and scattered ink marks and light soiling to reverse (lightly touching signature).
