Fabled Confederate ranger (1833–1916) whose guerrilla band specialized in attacking and disrupting Union supply lines. He earned the nickname “The Gray Ghost” for his clandestine and highly effective attack tactics. ALS signed “Jno. S. Mosby,” one page, lightly-lined both sides, 8 x 10.5, Department of the Interior letterhead, August 15, 1901. Letter to “Chinn” written from Akron, Colorado. In part: “I arrived here a week ago. This is a station on the Burlington road—112 miles east of Denver. The climate is delicious—like Virginia in October. My companions are cowboys—coyotes—& cattle. I hope to be transferred & have my headquarters at Denver very soon…I wrote to Miss Kate about sending my portrait to Clarke’s to be framed.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, scattered toning and soiling, paperclip impressions and notations to top, light show-through from conclusion of letter on reverse, and a few creases. An interesting postbellum letter from one of the Confederacy’s most storied commanders.
