John Ruskin Autograph Letter Signed "J. Ruskin". Two pages, 5" x 8", Altorf, August 26, 1860, to A. G. Agnew. In part: "It is a matter of sincere sorrow that I cannot accept the gracious invitation that extended from your shores. One of the many engagements and helps which I have received from the sympathy and trust of the American public. But I am now engaged in a more practical work which will prevent me, perhaps for years, from writing or lecturing except in a quite casual way, and all this work has to be done in Europe...I hope to keep the use of my tongue perhaps a little longer." Ruskin virtually dictated artistic opinion in Britain in the mid-1800s. Mailing folds, else fine.
