John Rogers: His Classic Civil War Sculpture "Wounded to the Rear / One More Shot". This evocative and finely detailed sculpture is made of a dense, plaster-like composition material with a painted surface. The present example appears to have been re-painted to simulate a bronze finish; the original was in a more muted tone. Otherwise in beautiful condition, this 1864 dated sculpture depicts a standing Union soldier with detailed accoutrement beside a seated comrade wearing a bandage around his head and apparently attending to a wounded foot; his shoe is removed and hanging at his side, and his pack is open in the foreground revealing an unfolded pocket knife. It is hard to tell whether the knife is intended for a surgical procedure, or was needed to remove the shoe. During the War, soldiers often wore the same shoes or boots for weeks without removing them, until they became so caked with dirt and blood that they were virtually fused to the wearers foot. Measures approximately 32.75" tall x 9.25" in diameter at base.

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Larg (view shipping information)
