Wow! What a find! This Mahogany Chippendale Tall Case Clock, made by "John Reilly, the master Irish clock maker, later of Philadelphia" (copied from Davison's ad for the clock), is circa 1770-1790. It was purchased by the current owner at Davison's Corner Shop in Atlanta during the 1950's. It has a hood with arched pediments, carved rosettes and a shell carved at the center. Behind one of the pediments the wood seemed to have cracked and has been repaired which is visible in the last picture. There are carved animal heads and foliage along the frieze. The face of the clock is steel and chased brass with Roman numerals. At the bottom of the face is "John Reilly, Dublin". Note the second hand dial and what I would guess is a date dial. All of this is flanked by fluted turned columns and covered by a glass door. There is a long door at the waist which is flanked by fluted quarter columns. Behind the door are the weights and the pendulum. The clock rests on a flat plinth base. It is 19 1/2 inches wide, 10 inches deep and 90 inches tall. The clock does work and has the sound of a bicycle bell when it chimes. The hood can be removed to expose the workings behind the face. The back panel behind the workings has very old paper applied to the wood, however, most of the paper has worn away. It is absolutely a beautiful piece and would be a wonderful addition to any home.
