American journalist, poet, and socialist activist (1887–1920) known for his account of the Bolshevik Revolution, Ten Days That Shook the World. TLS signed "Yours sincerely, John Reed," one page, 10 x 8, personal letterhead, January 28, 1917. Personal letter mentioning his upcoming trip to China with his wife. He begins with some discussion of finances. In part, "That leaves for you only the taxes and interest to attend to, and I think the rent of the big house in Truro ought to cover that easily. Mrs. Reed is going with me to China. Now about the Truro house. On account of taking the Sylvester house away from Mr. Cook, I told him that I would rent him my Truro house for the summer for $80, if he wanted it…Do you think you could rent it? And for how much? I thought that we couldn't get more than $150 for it, way down there. If the Cooks don't want it perhaps they will suggest someone; they are thinking about it now." Intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, light wrinkling and toning, and a bit of scattered mild foxing, otherwise fine condition.
