Boldly penned ALS as secretary of state, one page, trimmed to a size of 7.25 x 6.75, May 15, 1823. Letter of personal thanks to W. C. Somerville of Baltimore, also offering his approval of Somerville’s essays. In full: “I have received your very obliging letter of the 10th instt. together with a copy of your Letters from Paris, on the causes and consequences of the French Revolution. From the cursory perusal that I have been able to give this work, I have had ample reason to be satisfied that its principles and its sentiments are such as eminently befit an American, and a friend of universal benevolence. I party you to accept my thanks for it.” Letter is affixed to an 8 x 11 off-white sheet. In very good condition, with a light vertical fold through a single letter of signature, small hole affecting one letter of text, and scattered light soiling.
