Partly printed DS, signed “J. Q. Adams” as president, five pages on three sheets of vellum, 11 x 14.75, October 11, 1828. A patent for “a new and useful improvement in window blinds” issued to John Parkerson. The patent claim notes that the invention “consists of an easy and simple method of closing or opening the laths or slats of the blind so as that all the laths or any required number of them will open or shut simultaneously at one operation and will stand parallel with each other in any required position….” Signed on the first page by Adams and countersigned by Secretary of State Henry Clay.The following pages bear a handwritten description by Parkerson detailing his improvement, and begins: “My improvement in Window Blinds consists of an easy and simple method of closing or opening the laths or slats of the blind so as that all the laths or any required number of them will open or shut simultaneously at one operation and will stand parallel with each other in any required position.” Intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and some mild soiling, creasing and wrinkling, otherwise fine condition. The paper seal remains intact on the first page and the document also retains its red ribbon binding.
