Partly-printed DS in French, one page, 9.5 x 15, July 30, 1816. Passport from the 'United States of America Legation in England,' issued for the safe passage of William H. Prescott en route to France. Signed boldly in the lower right corner by John Quincy Adams as the U.S. ambassador to Britain. The document bears copious official annotations to the front and back. Impressively matted and framed to an overall size of 23.75 x 26.25; frame backing features a window for viewing reverse of document. In very good condition, with small repairs on the back of folds, small areas of paper loss, and a larger area of loss where the seal was once attached at the top; frame features slight separations to corners. Adams issued a total of 632 passports during his post from 1815 to 1817, and he's considered to be one of the first to issue preprinted passports abroad.
