Partly-printed DS, signed “J. Q. Adams,” one page, 7 x 11.75, December 29, 1820. Official document issued as secretary of state certifying that “Aaron B. Nones of Pennsylvania has been appointed by the President of the United States as their Agent for Commerce and Seamen at Aux Cayes, with all the privileges and authorities of right appertaining to that appointment.” The white paper seal affixed to the lower left remains intact. In very good condition, with several repaired separations and tears (a vertical tear passing through much of the manuscript body of the document) with toning from repairs to the reverse. A member of a prominent Jewish family in Philadelphia, Nones served as the US Consul for Commerce and Seamen at Aux Cayes in southwestern Haiti from 1820 to 1822.
