Partly-printed DS, signed “J. Q. Adams,” as president and “H. Clay,” as secretary of state, one page, 20.25 x 16.25, October 29, 1825. A four-language ship’s papers issued to “Thomas Russell master or commander of the Ship called Balaena…lying at present in the port of New Bedford bound for Pacific Ocean, and laden with Provisions & Stores, with Utensils for a whale voyage.” Signed in the third panel by Adams, and countersigned by Secretary of State Henry Clay. Intersecting folds, partial separation along central vertical fold, with an old reinforcement to the same fold, scattered toning and soiling, mirroring of ink from folding, and scattered edge wear and creasing, otherwise very good condition. The white wafer seal is lightly toned but intact. Both signatures are largely unaffected by the document’s flaws. An uncommon pairing of two important politicians.
