This is the original authentic John Quincy Adams Presidential Indian Peace and Friendship Medal of 1825. This is the 76mm “First Size” and largest of the three styles made. This size medal would have been given to a highly respected Indian Chief. The medal is an original first strike of solid bronze. The obverse shows a bust of President John Quincy Adams facing right surrounded by “John Quincy Adams President of the United States” and “1825” below. The reverse shows clasped hands (one clothed and the other without clothing) with a crossed peace pipe and tomahawk above and the legend "Peace And Friendship”. The same reverse was used on all Peace Medals after 1801. The John Adams medal is one of the more scarcely seen and highly desired. The Medal was commissioned by Thomas L. McKenney, head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and engraved and designed by Mortiz Furst. The piece is still displayed on the original “Ward & Wilson Military & Society Goods” sash most likely presented to the Indian Chief. The sash and medal measure overall 14”x20” and the medal is 76mm or 3”
