British politician John Profumo (1915-2006) was born to Alberto Profumo, a diplomat and Sardinian Baron. Commissioned into the Royal Armoured Corps, he served in North Africa, and fought on D-Day in France. His career in the British Army was honoured with an OBE (military) and the United States honoured him with a Bronze Star Medal.
Profumo was elected to the House of Commons while still serving in the army. Conservative Profumo was the youngest MP at the time, leaving the army in 1950, and marrying actress Valerie Hobson in 1954. He was given a number of high-status appointments in the Conservative government, and became Secretary of War and a member of the Privy Council.
The 'Profumo Affair' of 1963 was, however, the end of his political career. His mistress, Christine Keeler, was exposed as a call girl who was seeing a Russian naval attaché and alleged Soviet spy.
Profumo resigned immediately and spent the rest of his life as a volunteer, cleaning toilets at Toynbee Hall and working as a fundraiser for the charity. This helped restore his reputation. He was awarded a CBE in 1975 and invited to Margaret Thatcher's 70th birthday dinner.
This white note card, 3¾" x 5", bears Profumo's signature and dates to the 1950s. The autograph is in good condition, the grey-blue pen ink but clear and crisp.
