Kentucky-born Union general (1822–1892) who led the Army of the Mississippi in a campaign that opened the great river nearly to Memphis. His failures after the Peninsular Campaign and at Second Bull Run in August 1862 precipitated his replacement by General George McClellan. ALS signed “Jno. Pope,” one page, 8 x 10, Headquarters Department of the Lakes letterhead, April 1, 1870. Pope accepts an invitation from journalist William Conant Church. In part: “Be pleased to accept & to convey to the Society of the Army of the Potomac my thanks for the invitation to attend the Annual Reuinon and Banquet…It will give me my great pleasure to be present …” In fine condition, with intersecting folds.
