Kentucky-born Union general (1822–1892) who led the Army of the Mississippi in a campaign that opened the great river nearly to Memphis. His failures after the Peninsular Campaign and at Second Bull Run in August 1862 precipitated his replacement by General George McClellan. ALS signed “Jno. Pope, Brig. Genl,” one page, 4.5 x 7.5, Headquarters, Department of the Missouri letterhead, Fort Leavenworth, May 23, 1879. Letter to a gentleman. In part: “In compliance with your request, I take pleasure in sending you what you ask.” Professionally inlaid into a slightly larger off-white sheet. In fine condition, with a light pencil notation to the lower left.
