English geologist (1800–1874) who published the first global geologic time scale based on the correlation of fossils in rock strata, thereby helping to standardize terminology including the term 'Mesozoic,' which he created. ALS signed “John Phillips, MA, LLD, FRS, Pres. Geol. Soc. Lond., Reader in Geology in the Univ. of Oxford,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, October 12, 1859. Handwritten letter to English botanist and taxonomist Maxwell T. Masters, in part: "I am glad to convey to you, on this occasion of your Candidature for the Chair of Botany in King's College, London, the renewal of my entire conviction that you are well suited for the duty, well trained in Botany, well-accustomed to teach & successful in teaching, and truly zealous in the cultivation of natural science. It appears to me fortunate for your future plans of life that you had such admirable opportunities of acquiring a thorough practical knowledge of our Oxford Botanic Garden, & the magnificent Fielding Herbarium." In fine condition, with a rusty circular paperclip impression to the top.
