John Phillip Murray studied art at NCAD. He has had numerous solo shows most noticeably at the Vangard and Lavitt Galleries, Cork. He also exhibits at the RHA annual exhibitions. The present work belongs to a series of Lake paintings from the early 1990s, exhibited collectively as the ‘Gearagh Works’ at the Wyvern Gallery, Dublin, in 1991. In the catalogue to the exhibition, Aidan Dunne praised the lake series, noting that their ambiguous symbolic meaning opened the works to several interpretations on the part of the viewer.
