<B>John Penn Document Signed</B></I> "<I>John Penn</B></I>" as Lieutenant Governor and Commander in Chief of the Province of Pennsylvania, two pages, 7.75" x 12.25", front and verso. Philadelphia, May 31, 1765. Countersigned "<I>Joseph Shippen Jr/Secretary</B></I>." Order to Colonel Turbutt Francis "<I>to Muster the present Garrison of Fort Augusta, to settle their Pay-Toll, and to Sign Certificates of the Sums due from the Province to each Officer and Soldier not exceeding thirty in the whole...</B></I>" Penn notifies Francis that he has ordered Captain Graydon "<I>to collect all the Tools, Cannon, Military Stores and everything else belonging to the Province now in the Fort, and to transport them in Battoes or Canoes under the Escort of his Company to Harris's Ferry...</B></I>" Col. Francis is told that he will be in charge of the soon to be evacuated Fort Augusta "<I>on condition that some sober reputable persons constantly reside therein and will engage to take as much care as possible that the Works, Buildings &ca be preserved...</B></I>" John Penn was Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania from 1763-1771 and 1773-1776; his brother Richard served from 1771-1773. John was in office when propriety rule was abolished and when the long running battle over the Pennsylvania/Maryland border was settled by the establishment of the Mason and Dixon Line. During the Revolution, he was a Loyalist. According to William A. Hunter in <I>Forts on the Pennsylvania Frontier, 1753-1758 </B></I>(Harrisburg: Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, 1960), Fort Augusta was, "the most impressive of the forts built by Pennsylvania during the French and Indian War, the one longest garrisoned by provincial troops, and the last one used for military purposes." A half-inch x 1" portion has been torn out in the center affecting three words on each side. Paper seal of Pennsylvania affixed to top left with red wax. Fine condition. <I>Ex. Henry E.
