Confederate general (1815–1879) known for his feuds with Braxton Bragg and Jefferson Davis. Civil War–dated LS signed “J. McCown,” one page, 8.25 x 10.5, July 11, 1861. McCown writes from Fort Pillow to an adjutant general. In part: “I would earnestly call the attention of the General Commanding the Army to the necessity of extending the telegraph to this point. The force at Randolph could then in case of an attack be in constant communication with its advanced position. The distance as the ‘Crow Flies’ cannot be over eight miles. I think eight miles of wire would cover the distance. I have a telegraphic operator in my Command.” Intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), a few small edge tears, and paper loss to the lower right corner, otherwise fine condition.
