Financier and militia officer during the Revolutionary War (1733–1808) who made the first public proclamation of the Declaration of Independence from the steps of the Pennsylvania State House on July 8, 1776. Manuscript DS, signed "John Nixon," one page, 8 x 6.5, March 14, 1776. Nixon endorses a pay order calling for the Committee of Accounts to "pay Capt'n John Hamilton or order sixty six pounds nine shillings & four pence being the amount of his rations." Signed in the lower right by Nixon. In very good condition, with partial separations to folds, a few repairs to reverse (including a couple small repaired tears to signature area), and chipping to brittle edges. A fantastic document dating to the historic year of 1776.
