ALS, one page, 8.5 x 11, February 9, 1910. Letter to General Henry L. Abbot. In part: “Your kind letter makes me fairly tingle with pleasure as it brings back those memorable days & months in the western mountains…Making your acquaintance was my best Forestry commission gain. I occasionally hear from Prof. Sargent but never from Pinochet. Notwithstanding his great energy & good work accomplished he seems to have lost his head in coal & timber conservation…I wish you would write to Ballinger & the President on Hetch Hetchy.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds and some mirroring to ink at the top of the page. Hetch Hetchy was a valley in Yosemite that was targeted by the city of San Francisco to use for a reservoir. Muir campaigned to preserve the valley’s natural beauty, but in 1913 Congress and President Wilson authorized the flooding of Hetch Hetchy and it was turned into a dam and reservoir.
