John Muir Typed Letter Signed “John Muir,” one page, 7.5” x 5”. Martinez, California, April 3, 1909. To Gouveneur Rogers, Brooklyn, N.Y. In full, “Mr. Greene of Pasadena, has lately made a number of photographs said to be very good of me. The photographer informed me that they would be for sale at the book store of A. C. Vronan, 60 East Colorado St., Pasadena, California.” John Muir campaigned for the preservation of natural environments through his work as an environmentalist, geologist, and botanist. Muir's articles in Robert U. Johnson's “Century” magazine and its publisher's lobbying resulted in Congress creating Yosemite National Park in 1890. Two years later, Muir helped form the Sierra Club to protect it. Muir was also personally involved in the creation of Sequoia, Mount Rainier, Petrified Forest, and Grand Canyon national parks. John Muir and Yosemite Valley are depicted on the California quarter minted in 2005. John Muir, Caesar Rodney (1999 Delaware), Lincoln (2003 Illinois), and Helen Keller (2003 Alabama) are the only people whose image and name are engraved on quarters in the 50 state quarter set (1999-2008). There is 7” x 4.25” rectangular brown toning from prior framing and exposure to sunlight which has resulted in a significant fading of the typing but not John Muir's signature which is dark and clear. Mounting remnants on verso. Small tear at upper right corner. Very good condition. 7

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
