English poet, writer, and Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1930 until his death in 1967 (born 1878) who is remembered for the classic children's novels The Midnight Folk and The Box of Delights, and numerous poems, including ‘The Everlasting Mercy’ and ‘Sea-Fever.’ Two letters, a TLS and ALS, both one page, no date, measuring 4.5 x 7 and 5.25 x 6.5. Both letters are addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Henry J. Fisher. The TLS, written on Boars Hill, Oxford letterhead, in full: “I thank you for your very kind cable of congratulation. I regret that it is not possible for me to thank all my gracious friends with a written letter.” The ALS, penned on 107, East 70th Street letterhead, in full: “So many thanks for your kind letter. I’m afraid we shall not be able to accept your very kind invitation, but we send our greetings to your wife & you, & hope that we may meet before we leave.” Masefield handwrites the salutation and a single emendation to the TLS. In overall fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope for the TLS, addressed in Masefield’s own hand.
