Influential American statesman and jurist (1755–1835) who served as the fourth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Among the notable cases over which Marshall presided were the judicial review landmark Marbury v. Madison (1803) and the 1807 trial of Aaron Burr for treason. ADS, one page both sides, 8 x 13.25, June 18, 1816. Document for the sale of Marshall’s hunting lodge in Buckingham County. In full: “This indenture made this eighteenth day of June in the year one thousand eight hundred and sixteen between Walter L. Fontaine of the county of Buckingham of the one part and John Marshall of the city of Richmond of the other part witnesseth that the said Walter L. Fontaine for and in consideration of the sum of four thousand two hundred and fifteen dollars to him the said Walter L. Fontaine in hand paid by him the said John Marshall at and before the sealing and delivery of these present he the said Walter L. Fontaine Hath granted bargained and sold and doth by these present grant bargain and sold to the said John Marshall one certain tract of land lying on Randolph’s neck in the county of Buckingham containing by estimation four hundred and twenty one and one half acres being the same land which is conveyed to the said Walter L. Fontaine by John Marshall and Mary Willis his wife by deed bearing even date with these presents and executed before the execution of this indenture To have and to hold the said tract of land to him the said John Marshall his heirs and assigned for ever but on this condition, that whereas the said Walter L. Fontaine stands justly indebted to the said John Marshall in the sum of four thousand two hundred and fifteen dollars payable one third on the first day of March in the year one thousand eight hundred and seventeen, one third on the first day of March one thousand eight hundred and eighteen, and the remaining third on the first day of March in the year one thousand eight hundred and nineteen, and the remaining third on the first day of March in the year one thousand eight hundred and nineteen now if the said Walter L. Fontaine shall will & truly pay to the said John Marshall the said sums of money as they shall respectively become due then this indenture and the estate hereby granted bargained and sold shall ceased determine and be utterly void. And the said Walter L. Fontaine for himself his heirs exers & admins doth covenant and agree to and with the said John Marshall that he the said Walter L. Fontaine shall and will well and truly pay to the said John Marshall the said several sums of money herein before specified as the same shall become due and payable. In Witness whereof the said Walter L. Fontaine hath hereunto set his installments instead of three he paying interest on so much as remains due to each installment estimating them as in this deed. J Marshall.” Signed at the conclusion by “W L Fontaine” and four other witnesses. Also at the bottom of the second page is the schedule of payments, covering 1817 to 1821, also in Marshall’s hand. In very good condition, with scattered toning and soiling, a few small pinholes of paper loss, scattered creasing and wrinkling, a few light stains, and show-through from writing on reverse.
