Choice ALS signed “J. Marshall,” one page both sides, 8 x 10, December 3, 1832. Letter to James Gould, at Litchfield Law School in Connecticut. In part: “Your very valuable treatise ‘on the principles of pleading in civil actions’ reached this place, and came to my hands on my return…I have now read it through…you have well arranged the matter belonging to the subject; and have succeeded in your design of presenting it ‘as a system of consistent and rational principles, adopted with the utmost precision to the administration of justice, according to uniform rules.’ By showing the reason of the rule plainly, the rule itself becomes more intelligible to the student, and will more certainly adhere to his memory…my thanks for the gratification afforded me by the perusal of your work.” Addressed on the reverse of the second integral page in Marshall’s hand. In fine condition, with intersecting folds and some paper loss and mounting remnants to second integral address leaf. A wonderfully preserved letter boasting excellent legal content written while serving as chief justice of the Supreme Court. Provenance: The Everett Fisher Collection.
