JOHN M. CLAYTON (1796-1856) American lawyer and politician. Clayton served in the Delaware General Assembly, as Senator from that state and as U.S. Secretary of State. Autograph Letter Signed, “John M. Clayton.” Two pages, 7 3/4” x 9 3/4”. Washington. March 27, 1856. Clayton writes, in part: “ … I rec. your letter enclosing your note for the rent of last year and will send it to Mr. Terry … I suppose it will be more convenient for you to pay it to him in Bank than to bring or risk sending to money him … I take the note as a collateral security for the rent & when paid you will rec. it back & hold it as your receipt for the rent … ” Small strip of paper affixed to left edge, not affecting text. Usual folds. Overall Fine.
