<B>John Locke, </B></I><B><I>The Works of John Locke, Vol. II</B></I></B></I> (London: Awnsham Churchill, 1772 ), second edition, 671 pages, brown-leather binding with gold lettering and decorations, folio (12.5" x 8"). John Locke (1632-1704) founded the British Empiricist school of philosophy, which held that the human mind is a "blank slate" (<I>tabula rosa</B></I>) at birth and that ideas are formed through sensory perception. This volume was withdrawn from the Smith College Library: a bookplate is affixed inside the front cover and a stamp appears at the bottom of the title page.
