Bishop Stillingfleet, a learned man of God, had attacked Locke in his Discourse in Vindication of the Doctrine of the Trinity of 1696. Stillingfleet had read a pamphlet by the Irish pantheist Toland, who had argued that there was nothing mysterious in Christianity, which Toland claimed was based on Locke's Essay. Stillingfleet accused Locke's philosophy of materialism. Locke answered this attack promptly with A Letter to the Right Reverend, published in 1697. Stillingfleet countered, Locke replied, Stillingfleet objected, and Locke responded with the version offered here. This long and memorable controversy ended with the death of the Bishop soon after this, Locke's third response. An interesting and revealing discourse on "Certainty by Reason, Certainty by Ideas, and Certainty of Faith."

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
