New Hampshire politician (1741-1819) and signer of the Constitution. Scarce endorsement signed “John Langdon, Cap. Genl,” written vertically along the left edge of a 14 x 12 military appointment of Jabez James, dated June 13, 1801. Endorsement, in a clerical hand reads: “The said Jabez James has requested leave to resign this commission and having received the Consent of the Superior Officer his resignation is accepted,” and signed by Langdon at the conclusion. The document itself appoints James to the position of "Major of the First Battalion on the Tenth Regiment of Militia, in the State of New-Hampshire.” The appointment is signed by Minuteman and New Hampshire governor John Taylor Gilman. In very good condition, with intersecting storage folds, scattered light creasing, wrinkling, and toning, damp staining along top fold, and a few small edge separations. The white seal is worn and slightly toned, but intact. An interesting document tying together both Langdon’s distinguished military and political career.
