Gettysburg shoemaker, who upon seeing the Union soldiers march past his home, joined the Iron Brigade at the Battle of Gettysburg. He was wounded, but survived to become a national celebrity. Rare original vintage 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Burns holding his Enfield rifle, backstamped "Published by E.&H.T. Anthony, 501 Broadway, New York, from Photographic Negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery,” signed on the reverse in black ink, “John L. Burns, Gettysburg.” Double matted and framed (so both sides of the CDV are visible) with a color print of an artist’s portrait of Burns at Gettysburg, and a biographical plaque, to an overall size of 24 x 21.5. In very good condition, with trimmed corners, some light surface loss to edge of image, affecting only background, small spot to reverse, and some slight pooling of ink to a couple letters. Oversized. RRAuction COA.
