For the past twenty-two years John Kingerlee has lived and worked in West Cork on the Beara Peninsular, looking out across Kenmare Bay towards the mountains of Kerry. His multi-layered paintings evolve over months and years, accumulating strata in a manner that echoes the geological processes that formed the surrounding landscape. Scrutinising the resultant pitted and textured paint surfaces is like looking at a relief sculpture, but the fact that the underlying layers remains visible creates a sense of infinitely receding space, and the experience is akin to that of looking through a window towards the sky or sea (Kingerlee’s studio window is oriented thus). In Kilcatherine, Co. Cork, half-formed shapes come in and out of focus, similar in manner to the work of Yeats, and the sensuously applied colours evoke a pervasive mood or atmosphere that induces contemplation.
