American statesman (1745–1829) who served variously as President of the Continental Congress, diplomat, and, from 1789 to 1795, first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Partly-printed partial DS, one page, 8 x 5, no date. Partial document regarding the death of James Stryker, and appointing his widow Mary Stryker to assume responsibility for his estate. Signed in the left side under the paper seal by Jay. In very good condition, with uniform overall toning, scattered light foxing, and partial separations along horizontal fold. The paper seal is toned and intact, and the signature remains clear and mostly unaffected.
