Manuscript DS, one page, 20 x 14, March 20, 1797. As governor of New York, Jay appoints 24 judges to "keep our peace in the County of Delaware." Signed at the folded bottom by Governor John Jay, and countersigned on the reverse by Secretary of State Jasper Hopper. The bottom of the document is bound by a large and visually appealing "Great Seal of the State of New York," suspended from a purple ribbon. Extremely fragile and in good to very good condition, with splitting and nearly complete separations along the intersecting folds.
