Jay was an American statesman (1745–1829) who served variously as President of the Continental Congress, diplomat, and, from 1789 to 1795, first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Gouverneur Morris was an American statesman (1752–1816) and signer of the Constitution from Pennsylvania who authored several sections of that document, including the well-known Preamble. He later served as American Minister to France (during much of that country’s Revolution) and US Senator. Manuscript DS, one page, 8 x 13, July 3, 1806. Jay and Morris issue a power of attorney appointment for Peter Jay Munro “to collect, demand, and receive all rents now due and owing or hereafter to become due and owing unto us as trustees as a foresaid from any person or persons whatever.” Signed at the conclusion “John Jay,” and “Gouv Morris.” A mild shade of overall toning, intersecting storage folds, small tape repair to reverse of one fold, and missing lower right corner tip, otherwise fine condition. The signatures are quite bold and unaffected by any of the flaws. An uncommon and desirable combination of early American patriots.
