John Jay DS 1801
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Excellent document signed by Supreme Court Chief Justice, diplomat, founding father and here, Governor of New York, John Jay. Dated 23 March 1801, document concerns the charter of Cayuga Academy in New York, where Jay signs his full name and adds in his hand (apparently amending text of the document): ''An Erazure [sic] next after the word Academy, which is now the last word in the Preamble, and also an Erazure [sic] between the word Academy (which is now the last word in the sixth Line of this Page) and the words In Testimony - being first made.'' As Governor of New York, John Jay served as Chancellor of the Board of Regents for Cayuga Academy, which opened in the fall of 1800. Two page document measures 9.25'' x 14.75'', with embossed paper seal of the Regents of the University of the State of New York intact. Endorsed under seal, ''Mr. Bloodgood, Secry''. Small loss at folds professionally repaired, not affecting Jay's penned notation and signature. Very good condition with a dark, clear signature.
