New York Governor John Jay militia appointment signed. Partly-printed document datelined Albany, New York, 22 March 1797 appoints Gilbert Van Alen ''Ensign of a Company...in the County of Columbia.'' According to docketing on the verso (undated though contemporary with the document), Van Alen was killed after he was ''dragged'' by ''Two fine young colts.'' Document bears an intricate paper seal at upper left with Jay's signature directly below. Measures 15'' x 9.25''. Moderate toning and foxing, and shadowing to signature. Very good condition.
