Member of the fabled Astor family of businessmen and financiers (1822–1890). The wealthiest family member of his generation, he served in the army during the Civil War (reaching the rank of brevet brigadier general) and later focused his business interests primarily on the acquisition and management of Manhattan real estate. ALS signed “J. J. Astor,” one page both sides, 5 x 8, personal letterhead, no date. Letter to A. Russell. In part: “ Mrs. Astor has done nothing towards finding a clergyman for our parish for the Summer, and did not understand that you expressed to her to take any steps for engaging one.” Intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, rusty paperclip impression to top edge, small pencil notation to front, and partial separation along hinge of second blank integral page, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
