John Jacob Astor III Signature "Yrs truly J. J. Astor New York Nov 20th 1880" on a white card, 3.5" x 2". A grandson of the legendary founder of the family dynasty who was the first millionaire in the United States, this Astor was born in 1822 and volunteered in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was an excellent soldier and rose to the rank of colonel; he was brevetted brigadier general for his service during the Peninsular campaign. He was the wealthiest Astor of his generation, dabbling in railroads but concentrating on the vast Astor New York landholdings. His home in the city was at 350 Fifth Avenue, now the street address of the Empire State Building. Very fine condition.

Important notice:</
