John Jacob Astor III (1822-1890) Document Signed "J.J. Astor." One page, 12" x 8.5", Canal Department, Albany, New York, November 6, 1880. This stock certificate comes from the State of New York, Canal Department in Albany and is filled out to John Jacob Astor. Astor signs the verso in bold, dark ink. Astor would only have been 16 when this stock was issued; this shows how he was involved in money and finance even at an early age. Known by most as John Jacob Astor IV, he was the Astor who served as a lieutenant colonel in the Spanish-American war and made his money in real estate, including the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Astor was killed along with 1500 others when the Titanic struck and iceberg and sank in 1912. Many stories circulate about Astor's heroics that night when the boat sank, including one in which he places a woman's hat on a boy to ensure that he got off the boat safely.

The document is in fine condition; the usual folds are present; the paper is brittle and separating; small hole present in the center of the value of the stock certificate.
