American army officer (1860–1948) who was Commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe during World War I and one of the most celebrated soldiers in American history. ANS, on one of Pershing’s 3.5 x 1.5 calling cards, no date. Short note of thanks for a birthday greeting. In full: “It was very nice of you to send me birthday greetings.
